I had experienced both and what I share below might help us all. It was not clear to me if you got an error that it could not find a java virtual machine or the app begins to start, but then gets a NullPointer error. Hopefully others will offer some suggestions too but here are a few things I found. Unfortunately, I had a similar situation and error message with my setup after upgrading to Big Sur.
